Racing Update

Cruiser Fun Race in the Bay

Got the boat rigged and ready to sail? Need a break from the “To Do List”? What better way to shake out the kinks and reef lines than to join us Sunday, June 8 for the Cruiser Fun Race in the Bay.

The no-pressure start will be an open 15 minute window beginning at noon. Sail around some marks in the Bay with your family and friends deciding which way to go. There are some special “crewsing” credits for women drivers, four legged crew, water snakes and men in sundresses. The length of the course will be determined by the weather.

The Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions have been posted on the HBYC website.

2019 Race Registration Form

The updated form is also available on the website. If you raced with us last year and there have been no changes, just complete the first three lines and sign the Waiver of Liability.  If not, we will need the details for your boat so we can assign a handicap rating. Please register early to avoid the rush.

Race in the Bay for Stein Hospice - July 6

The pursuit start format and course will be the same as last year. In 2018 we had a total of twelve boats racing in two divisions.

The Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions have been posted on the HBYC website.

The full schedule of racing is listed in the Racing Flyer posted around the marina and on the website.

Race Committee

We need volunteers to help run the races. Give me a call if you would like to help. The Sea Scouts have volunteered to help set the marks which will be a big help.

Need additional information, give me a call at 614-395-8035, or come by “Waypoint” at dock C-101.

Commodore’s Corner

Commodore Harvey Rickert

Welcome back everyone! I was very pleased to see such a great turnout for our first membership meeting of the year. I know most of our members have their boats in the water and a few left to be launched.

Those at the membership meeting learned about the plans the Bridge implemented this season. For those who were not able to attend the meeting I want to refer you to the Vice Commodore’s Russell Marcks in-depth report in the News Section.

Don’t forget to RSVP for your tickets for the June 8  Social.   P/C Melanie Hitch  helped to organize and will be handling the reservations for the perch dinner. The scheduled speaker after the dinner is Scott Matthews’s Grandson Bob Reynolds. He will present the story of his Grandfather’s building the yacht Onward, and it being the first recreational yacht completing the Great Loop. I saw the presentation once and can’t wait to hear it again. It is fascinating adventure that all boaters will enjoy.

On behalf of the membership I thank our Bridge and Committee members and volunteers for their work on the upcoming  2019 season.

Support your club and have fun.

Harvey

RSVP by 3 June: Melanie Hitch at 937-409-1380 or click here to email Melanie —> I am coming! Save me some fish!

After the meal the speaker that could not make the Winter Rendezvous this year due to the snow storm is scheduled to speak.

Join Scott Matthews’ grandson, Bob Reynolds, as he presents a recreation of his grandfather's 9000-mile trip in Onward. This state-of-the-art vessel was the first recreational yacht to navigate the Great Loop.

Ever the inventor, Scott Matthews designed several devices to make power boats easier to operate. Among them was a leverage system that allowed a single person to operate a clutch for a reverse gear, as well as the throttle and spark. The system was installed on his own 74-foot boat, Onward, launched in 1905.

Onward also had such modern amenities as an “electric light plant” with storage batteries and a steam heating system (pipes passed through the coal-fired galley stove and into radiators in each compartment).

See you there!

Vices and Habits

By Russell Marcks, Vice Commodore

With our first membership meeting and social under our belt and much of our membership in the water, the season is well underway.  Those able to attend the meeting were greeted with good news about the plans the Bridge and Committee chairs have established.  For those that were not there, this is a synopsis.

Tim Kemmerley, along with the social, cruise, and race chairs, were able to present a great calendar for this summer.  The socials are well-planned thanks to Pat Altherr, the cruise program is healthy thanks to Art's efforts, and Larry has a great summer of racing in place.  The marina also has a nice slate of activities planned.  You can download a club calendar here or see it online here.

The bridge is also heavily involved in the improved marketing of the club as well as identifying necessary building improvements.  With respect to marketing, you might note we now have an updated tri-fold club brochure, a cruising brochure, a racing flyer, and an upcoming social flyer. Naturally, this also includes membership application forms.

Club Brochure
Cruising Brochure
Racing Brochure
June 8th Social!
Membership Application

All this will be displayed in the clubhouse, the marina office, the community room, and on the bathhouse bulletin boards.  Please remember, as a club member, you are an ambassador for the club.  We rely upon you to attract new members.

With respect to building improvements, we are instituting a five-year building improvement plan.  For this year, we plan on replacing all 42 lighting fixtures within the club.  This is our first priority.  A second priority is to upgrade the restrooms with new sinks, vanities, and faucets.

Please remember the most recent project was the replacement of the south air-conditioning unit.  As was mentioned in previous communications, this unit is controlled via a thermostat next to the HBYC office on the east wall.  Since this is a more efficient of the two units, please use the east thermostat to start the cooling (or heating) unit.  The North unit, which is controlled by the thermostat near the TV room, should be used only as a supplementary unit.

Wow...this news brief certainly is quite dry...isn't it. Oh well, some folks think I'm rather dry as well  :).  Hopefully, I can provide more entertaining news in the future.  If you've read this far, thanks!

I-LYA Supports Petition for Environmental Study

By Kevin Irwin - HBYC Webmaster

As the HBYC Webmaster I recently received information from the I-LYA (Inter-Lake Yachting Association) that I thought was important to share with HBYC members. I am not a journalist, but in an effort to be balanced I found a number of websites that I hope inform you of the issue.

I-LYA is monitoring the ICEBREAKER WINDPOWER INC. PROJECT very closely.

Icebreaker, an industrial wind facility intended to result in the construction of 1,400 to 1,500 wind turbines in Lake Erie by the year 2030, is nearing approval with the State of Ohio.  Icebreaker Wind is a unique wind energy project - the first offshore wind facility in the Great Lakes, the first freshwater wind farm in North America, and only the second offshore wind project in the entire U.S.

To learn more about this wind project click here: Icebreaker Windpower, Inc.

I-LYA has concerns about the unknown environmental impact of this project. They are supporting a petition asking Governor DeWine to request a complete Environmental Impact Statement before allowing the construction of industrial wind turbines in Lake Erie:     https://www.change.org/p/save-lake-erie-from-project-icebreaker-wind-turbine-development-before-it-is-too-late?signed=true

There are a number of groups who are opposing this project and have posted information to inform the public on this issue.

Commodore's Brunch Recap

by Commodore Harvey Rickert

I wanted to provide a brief update for those unable to attend the HBYC’s Commodore’s Brunch held at CIC (Catawba Island Club) on  Sunday April 7, 2019. The event was arranged by  Rear Commodore Tim Kemerly and his wife Effie. They selected a wonderful venue for our Commodore’s Brunch;  the food was presented well and was extremely good. The CIC Club members and staff welcomed us, even giving tours to those of us who might’ve asked.

Bill Market provided a history of his family business; Miller Ferry. He also shared beautiful photographic insight into how the ferry services is operated.   The speaker and presentation was very interesting and well received.

On behalf of HBYC members I want to thank the Rear Commodore Tim Kemerly for a fine event not only enjoyed by all but raved about!  A perfect kick off for the start of our 2019 boating season.

I look forward to seeing you all working on your boats and launching soon. Please feel free to reach out to me during this season and look for the fun schedule of planned events listed on the website. Click here —> I want to see more!

Membership Renewal Due March 31st!

All

A reminder that HBYC dues are must be received by 31 Mar 19.  You should have received a renewal form via email.  Dues payments after 31 Mar incur a 20% surcharge as shown on the renewal form.  If you are not renewing your membership, please email Brenda Marcks ( brenda@marcks.cc ) and let her know.

If you are considering not renewing, please consider carefully.  The benefits of the yacht club are many.  For example, if you are doing long distance cruising, our reciprocity agreements with other locations will save dockage fees usually paying back your club dues.

When renewing, please fill out the renewal form with any corrected or added information.  The information received is what populates our published roster; it is your responsibility to ensure it is correct.  If you've changed phone numbers, emails, dock assignments, boat, boat name, etc., please ensure these changes are passed on to Brenda so as to update the roster.  The current 2018 roster can be found under the members only area of the HBYC website.  If you're unsure your information is correct, please download from the members only area and verify.

Thank you for all you do for HBYC

March Commodore's Update

By Commodore Harvey Rickert

The 2019 Rendezvous was a great success despite the snowstorm.  Thanks to Vice Commodore Russell Marcks’ planning and watchful eye, and the members of our Yacht Club who make good things happen. Congratulations to everyone helping the Vice Commodore at the Rendezvous making it a great success.  It was great seeing everyone enjoying themselves, documented by Trustee Kevin Irwin’s great photographs. Which you can check out by clicking —-> here.

Ice build up on the break wall!

Ice build up on the break wall!

March is here and hopefully the weather will be changing soon and the ice will be melting on the break wall.

The good sign is I am already seeing people up at the Marina getting ahead of work on their boats and warming up at the Club House. Rear Commodore Tim Kemerly and his committees have been busy over the Winter: Nick Lewis (Power boat Coordinator), Art Harden (Cruising Director), Larry Hurst (Racing Director) and Pat Altherr , (Social Director) have worked together and planned a fun filled upcoming season. Check out the 2019 Schedule Events by clicking —> here.
