WINTER RENDEZVOUS UPDATE

Greetings from the Rear Commodore~

Well, we have been putting off making a decision about whether the Winter Rendezvous will take place in January, 2021 or not.   We have been waiting to see how the State of Ohio would be handling large gatherings as well as the trajectory of cases of COVID -19 with the hopes that case numbers would be trending downward.   Given what we know now, I’m sure that I don’t have to tell you that January 2021 will not be a good month for us to get together, much to my (and I would suspect yours as well) disappointment.  We had some fun things planned and some in the works with the hope that the Winter Rendezvous at the Mohican Lodge would be like it has been in years past, a wonderful time for friends to get together to reminisce about the previous seasons and to look forward to another awesome season of sailing/boating

As it stands now, we will moving our reservation at the Mohican Lodge back a year to January 2022.  Rick Billheimer, our incoming Rear Commodore, will be in charge of that and I know that he has some great ideas already.

We will be going forth with the Change of Watch Ceremony on that weekend, but as I write this, we are not sure what format that will be in.  That remains a work in progress.

I hope that each and everyone of you have a wonderful holiday season, filled with love, loved ones and gratitude for all that we have been blessed with, even during difficult times such as these.

Happy Holidays!

Winter Rendezvous Plans

Greetings from the Rear Commodore!

I hope that everyone is doing well and enjoying the mild fall weather.   Our boats are out of the water and I’m sure everyone is dreaming about the next season…hopefully, by then, everything will be back to “normal.”

I want to thank everyone for your understanding and patience last season with regard to the socials,  raffles, etc.   We definitely had to change things up because of the limitations of social distancing and gatherings of large crowds indoors.    We did an awesome job in raising money for some excellent causes despite our limitations.  Genie, Larry and Doug did an excellent job in Socials, Racing and Cruising and their hard work is very much appreciated.  It is so important to have volunteers step up to the plate and offer to help in this way.  An organization like ours does not function without the help of dedicated volunteers.

I wanted to give everyone an update about the current plans for the Winter Rendezvous.  We have reserved the Mohican Lodge ( www.discovermohican.com) for the last weekend in January (29th-31st) 2021.   This year’s theme is the psychedelic 60’s and the decade of the 1970’s.  I have been in touch with the Visitors Bureau to come up with some fun activities.   I have been in touch with a DJ to play our favorite 60’s-70’s music. (I don’t know about you, but I don’t even have to buy a costume for this one, I have things in my closet that will work!)  The Big Question is…what January 2021 will look like in terms of people being able to gather indoors in large groups.  We all know how much 2020 has been a challenge.   If we have to cancel due to restrictions or lack of comfort of participants coming to an event like this, so be it.  We will save it for 2022.  Fortunately, the Lodge is very understanding of the circumstances and we will let this play out for as long as we can.  But I wanted to put it on your radar so that you can be thinking about it.

If anyone has any comments,  suggestions or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at lundgren.janell@gmail.com.  In the meantime, stay safe, stay well, and stay optimistic!  This too shall pass.

Your Rear Commodore, Janell

PS-  This upcoming year, we will be offering yoga classes on the same day as the socials/membership meetings, as per Rick Billheimer’s (the incoming RC) request.  For those of you who are unaware, I have been in training this last year to become an instructor and I look forward to leading a beginner’s yoga class with anyone who is interested.

Stein Hospice Race Results

By P/C and Race Director - Larry Hurst

Thanks to all thirteen racers and the Race Committee. We donated $600 from the racing plus $500 from last month's raffle to Stein Hospice. Not bad for an unusual year. Thanks especially to the six boats from Sandusky Sailing Club and to Scott Peterson for traveling form Lorain. Photo credit to Pat Altherr.

Greetings from the Rear!

By Janell Lundgren R/C

Well, we are now in the “dog days of summer” which I recently found out has nothing to do with the heat of summer, nor dogs in the way we think of dogs,  our canine companions, but rather of Sirius, the dog star, and its position in the heavens.   According to a  National Geographic article I read, it is a time the Greeks and Romans noted that the Sirius appeared to rise just before the sun, in late July.  They referred to these days as the hottest time of the year. This past weekend, fortunately, was not very hot, but actually quite nice and I hope a lot of you were able to enjoy it!

Last weekend, HBYC hosted the rescheduled Stein Hospice Race in the Bay.  As compared to the strong winds that caused the rescheduling of the fund-raising race, this past Saturday saw light winds but enough to allow the race to take place.   There were 13 racing vessels (a record number of participants)  in two classes that participated and $600 in entrance fees were collected for Stein Hospice, in addition to the money that was raised by the 50/50 raffle and the donation of $500 that would have been used for dinner and entertainment  totaling $988.00.  Given the circumstances of the year of 2020, a $1,588.00 donation, as my Mom would say “that’s not too shabby!”

Also, last Saturday, there was a Scavenger Hunt at SHM that was organized by Social Coordinator Genie Barthelman.  A lively group, including a lot youngsters, participated in this event.  Everyone had  a lot of fun and I must say, as a participant, it was great exercise and it gave me an excuse to check out all of the docks in the marina, and see boats and meet people that I ordinarily would not see.   I think we should make this an annual event, as it was great to have so many young people engaged in a yacht club activity!

We have another cruising event coming up on the 22nd of August, an anchor out in Sandusky Bay, which will be weather dependant.    This trip will be lead by John Lueke.  As he decribes this event to“ provide an opportunity for people who have not anchored overnight to try it with plenty of other people around for support. The first choice for an anchoring spot would be west of Johnson’s Island near the Dempsey access ramp. This spot works well in east thru west northwest winds and has a mud bottom for a good anchor hold. If the wind goes farther south and blows over five knots we would need to try another spot. It would be a short dingy ride to the shore for people with dogs or others who wanted to go ashore for a walk. Couldn’t find any bars in the area to dingy to but we could go from boat to boat with the appropriate cautions. We could provide dingy taxi service For people without dinghies, if you are interested in trying this, send a message to Doug Asbury, Cruising Coordinatorl. We would have a skippers meeting at 10am on the 22nd to finalize the plan. We could also visit boats to check their anchoring equipment if the skipper is not sure about it.”

The last social/racing event of the year is Robby’s Voice Regatta and 100 ticket Reverse Raffle.  In the Reverse Raffle, we will  be raffling off items from the Ship’s Store to clear our inventory as well as other items, including a Beautiful Quilt donated by Melanic Hitch.    I am also requesting that our members create items to be raffled off like gift baskets ~wine and cheese baskets, nautical themed baskets, whatever you can come up with, to raise money for Robby’s Voice.  We will also be raffling off Dockage Fees donated by the Marina, up to $2,000.00, in a separate raffle.    We are also selling clothing items from the Ship’s store for $10.00 on a clearance rack at the Yacht Club to raise money.  As of last Saturday night, we already had raised over $200.00 in donations to Robby’s Voice!

We have two more cruises left to do in September, the ever popular Vermillion Cruise and the cruise to Lorain.  If you have any interest get in touch with Cruising Coordinator Doug Asbury and get your name on the list.

Til next time, fair winds,

Janell
